Latest news from Emily,
your domestic goodness in the kitchen!
Hi, I'm Emily from Seattle, in the USA!
Things are beginning to work out rather well on the baking and domestic goodness front - thanks to those brilliant guys at SmarterBaking and their incredible Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mats.
Now I'm even starting to get a bit of a reputation in the kitchen, thanks to my newest best friends and my mother's timeless recipes.
These non-stick baking mats haved saved my life on several occasions recently, whether baking cookies for The Book Group or pizzas for my friends at night - that squidgy cheese really does come off with the wipe of a cloth you know. And I'm also saving money on on the parchment paper and aluminium foil I used to buy all the time too. That's another real bonus!
Today, I'm baby-sitting a stroppy 13 year old girl called 'Honey' for her Mom and I'm also trying to bake a jam roly poly pudding at the same time.
So I'm in the kitchen and about to make the stickiest, jamiest, pudding, and in walks Honey.
"What'ya doin' Emily?" she asks, peering into anything and everything she can find with her long pointy fingers - each of her nails painted with the American flag. How does she do that?
"I'm baking a jam roly poly pudding" says I, not wanting to lie to my neighbour's precious 'angel'.
"So, how d'ya do that?" she said, after she'd finished rolling around on the floor trying to understand what this dumb Brit was telling her.
But with the help of my SmarterBaking mat, we managed to bake a superb pudding that just slid off the mat, looking deliciously and evenly brown, with the gooey red jam oozing out.
"Wow, these bad boys are so bad they're really cool" she gushed, deeply impressed with how baking could be so exciting - and rewarding too.
So now she's going to buy one for her Mom and her Mom's sister, Gloria, too.
"Well that's my Christmas shopping sorted out for this year", she said.
And you know what, I think I really believed her!
........ I'd made it when I was invited to join The Book Club at work.
Yes. Now I really am just like everybody else. I'm accepted. Right!
Well that was all fine and dandy, until it was decided that the next Group meeting would be at my place! So, think. What to do? What food and drink do I serve and can I do it?
So. Think. What would I do? What food would I serve them and am I up to it?
What would my Mum do? I know, I'll bake those cookies and biscuits they all love at work. They'll go down a treat.
But the proof, as they say, is not that simple and my efforts all turned out tragically wrong. The cookies all looked mishapen and broke up as I scraped my efforts off the baking tray.
Instead, I tried tarts. They've worked out alright before. But no, they were a disaster too - even worse than the cookies. So in the end and to my shame, I ordered pizzas for everyone just before they arrived.
Then a couple of days later, I saw this thing about SmarterBaking Non-Stick Silicone Baking mats. They're new and they look great!
That's a smart idea, I thought - obvious being my middle name!
So I bought one off Amazon and it came within 24 hours - with FREE delivery too.
The next day, I set to work on my cookies, and I couldn't believe it, they all worked a treat. Not only did they all keep their shape, but they were all deliciously brown and evenly baked - and they just slid off my new SmarterBaking Mat with no problems at all. Even cleaning was just as easy too, I simply wiped off the mat with warm, soapy water and left to dry naturally.
So thank you SmarterBaking, you've saved my life and my reputation.
Now I can't wait for my next turn to host The Book Club at home. I've already worked out what I'm going to do and now, I'll have the confidence to do it too.
Smart buy, I thought. Well done girl!
So I'm ready for our big night in,
when he tells me he's a vegetarian!
Hi there again, it's me Emily from Seattle, in America!
Well I survived another Book Group meeting at my place - successfully, this time, thanks to SmarterBaking's brilliant new Non-Stick Baking Mat. Thanks guys!
Now I have another problem. Boys! Well, to be precise. Men - or to be even more precise, just one man.
He works in the mail room and he's gorgeous. But now we've arranged to have supper at my place. Tonight, What was I thinking about?
But I had it all sussed out and knew just what to bake - a luscious lasagne for two with a nice bottle of Californian red. What could go wrong.
Well now I know. He's just called me to say that he's looking forward to tonight - oh and by the way, did he tell me he was a vegetarian?
What! Now I've nothing against not eating meat, but why didn't I know that. And why didn't he tell me before?
So I had to think what I could do. Fast. And then I thought of my Mum's roasted vegetables (bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes and serve with rice or pasta - lovely!). The only problem was that they tended to stick to the baking tray and break up into pieces.
Although, now that I have my new best friend with me in the kitchen, I won't have to worry about that. Nothing sticks to this mat - no way!
So I've placed them on my baking mat and put it in the oven.
And then it's ready. And would you believe it, the food just slides off the baking mat onto the serving dish, with no trouble at all.
It's all beautifully baked and looks brilliant. And the best of it is, I know that after the meal, when he clears up, he only has to wipe the mat and rinse in warm, soapy water.
Then our time is our own again!
So thank you again SmarterBaking. And keep eating the carrots, you clever people!
